Maria von Habsburg
Born in Madrid in 1528, Maria of Austria was the daughter of Emperor Charles V and wife of Emperor Maximilian II. Serving as Empress, Queen of Bohemia, and Queen of Hungary, she was an influential figure who also served as Regent of Spain on multiple occasions. A devout Catholic, her firm religious convictions sometimes contrasted with her husband's tolerant policies. Following his death, she returned to Spain, residing at the Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales in Madrid, where she remained an influential court figure and key patron of sacred music.
