Martin Luther
Martin Luther was a German monk, theologian, and seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation born in Eisleben in 1483. His 1517 Ninety-five Theses directly challenged Catholic practices regarding indulgences and papal power. Excommunicated by the Pope, Luther translated the Bible into German, democratizing scripture access and laying the foundations for the German language. His theological principles of faith alone and scripture alone redefined Christian worship, leading to the birth of Lutheranism and profound geopolitical transformation in Europe.
