Ascending the throne following the deposition of his uncle Abdulaziz, Murad V was an enlightened ruler supported by constitutional reformers who hoped he would usher in a parliamentary system. However, compounded by existing psychological distress, the trauma of his uncle's mysterious death and political violence severely broke his mental health. Deemed unfit to govern, he was deposed after a reign of just 93 days—the shortest in Ottoman history—and spent his remaining decades confined in Çırağan Palace.
