Paul Ehrlich
Paul Ehrlich was a pioneering German physician, scientist, and Nobel laureate who revolutionized immunology and pharmacology. Known as a founding father of modern chemotherapy, Ehrlich developed innovative tissue-staining techniques that advanced hematology and introduced the "magic bullet" concept—the idea that targeted chemical compounds could destroy specific pathogens without harming host cells. In 1909, alongside Sahachiro Hata, he discovered Salvarsan, an effective chemical treatment for syphilis that transformed infectious disease management. His side-chain theory of immunity provided a foundation for modern immunology. Ehrlich's interdisciplinary research permanently altered medical science, establishing principles that continue to guide drug development and targeted therapeutic strategies.
