André Masséna
André Masséna was one of Napoleon’s premier original Marshals of the Empire, earning the nickname "The Dear Child of Victory." Rising through the French Revolutionary Army, he displayed brilliant tactical skill during the Italian Campaigns at Lodi, Arcole, and Rivoli. His victory over Austro-Russian forces at the Second Battle of Zurich in 1799 saved France from invasion. Masséna went on to conduct the famous Siege of Genoa, commanded troops during the Italian campaign of 1805, and played pivotal roles at Aspern-Essling and Wagram in 1809. Despite his military genius, his reputation was occasionally tarnished by heavy-handed tactics and personal enrichment, notably during the 1810 Peninsular War invasion of Portugal.
