The First German Emperor and Prussian Expansion
Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig served as King of Prussia from 1861 and became the first German Emperor in 1871. A military officer from his youth, he fought in the Napoleonic Wars and helped suppress the 1848 Revolutions. After ascending the throne, he pursued army reforms and appointed Otto von Bismarck as Minister-President. Together, they navigated the Schleswig, Austro-Prussian, and Franco-Prussian Wars, culminating in his coronation at Versailles. Entrusting political affairs to Bismarck, Wilhelm I remained an influential symbol of Prussian military prestige and national unification.
