Pre-WWI Medical Legacy of Plague Doctor Charles de Lorme

Charles de Lorme was a prominent 17th-century French physician who served the French royal court under King Henry IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV. He is best known for inventing the protective suit worn by plague doctors during the 1619 plague epidemic in Paris, featuring a heavy leather coat and a beak-like mask filled with aromatic substances. While his career predated World War I by centuries, his pioneering focus on infection barrier clothing and quarantine concepts laid foundational groundwork for modern preventive medicine and infection control during wartime medical crises.
