James Chadwick: Neutron & MAUD

James Chadwick was a British experimental physicist born in Bollington, Cheshire, on October 20, 1891. Having discovered the neutron in 1932—a breakthrough that earned him the 1935 Nobel Prize in Physics—Chadwick played a crucial leadership role during World War II. He participated in the British Tube Alloys project and drafted the final draft of the influential MAUD Report, which confirmed the feasibility of an atomic bomb. Chadwick then served as the head of the British Mission to the Manhattan Project in the United States, effectively coordinating British scientists, US military leaders, and research teams to successfully build the first atomic weapons.
