Carl Friedrich Goerdeler: Conservative Civilian Leader
Carl Friedrich Goerdeler was a conservative politician, lawyer, and former Mayor of Leipzig who served as the primary civilian architect of the German resistance. Alarmingly opposed to Nazi rearmament, totalitarian rule, and anti-Semitic persecutions, he resigned his public posts to organize an underground political opposition. Goerdeler tirelessly drafted constitutional frameworks and policy blueprints for a post-Hitler democratic government, in which he was slated to serve as Chancellor following the July 20, 1944 coup. Captured after the plot's collapse, he was condemned by the People's Court and executed at Plötzensee Prison in 1945.
