Walther Rathenau
Walther Rathenau was a visionary German industrialist, writer, and politician who played a vital role in organizing Germany's war economy during World War I as head of the Raw Materials Department. After the war, he joined the German Democratic Party and served as Minister for Reconstruction before becoming Foreign Minister in 1922. Rathenau sought pragmatic international cooperation and famously negotiated the Treaty of Rapallo with Soviet Russia to restore Germany's diplomatic standing. His Jewish background, prominent industrial ties, and advocacy for fulfilling treaty obligations made him a target for far-right extremists, leading to his tragic assassination in June 1922, which deeply shocked the republic.
