Last Emperor Who Pursued Peace for Austria-Hungary
Charles I ascended the throne in November 1916 amidst the devastation of World War I as the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. Recognizing the empire's exhaustion, he immediately initiated secret peace negotiations with the Allies, known as the Sixtus Affair, in a desperate attempt to end hostilities. He also proposed reorganizing the empire into a federal state to satisfy nationalist ambitions. Despite his efforts, the war dragged on, leading to economic ruin and political dissolution. In November 1918, he renounced participation in state affairs, ending centuries of Habsburg rule before going into exile.
