Raoul Wallenberg
Raoul Wallenberg was a Swedish architect, businessman, and diplomat who led a heroic rescue mission in Budapest, Hungary, during 1944. Appointed to the Swedish legation, Wallenberg used his diplomatic authority to issue special protective passports (Schutz-Pässe) and purchased dozens of safe houses throughout the city under the Swedish flag. Through audacious negotiations, intimidation of Nazi officials, and direct intervention at deportation trains, Wallenberg saved tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews from death camps. In January 1945, he was detained by advancing Soviet forces and mysteriously vanished into the Soviet prison system.
