Varian Fry
Varian Fry was an American journalist and editor who led the Emergency Rescue Committee operations in Marseille, France, between 1940 and 1941. Operating in Vichy-controlled territory under constant surveillance, Fry established a covert network that utilized both legal and illegal means—including forged passports, black-market visas, and dangerous mountain escape routes across the Pyrenees—to rescue individuals threatened by the Gestapo. Through his extraordinary efforts, he successfully helped between 2,000 and 4,000 anti-Nazi dissidents, intellectuals, writers, and prominent Jewish artists escape occupied Europe to safety in the Americas.
