Marshal Pétain and the Authoritarian Vichy Regime
Marshal Philippe Pétain, a celebrated World War I hero known for his defense at Verdun, played a pivotal and tragic role in French political history during World War II. Following the rapid military collapse of France in June 1940, Pétain was appointed Prime Minister and promptly signed an armistice with Nazi Germany. He dismantled the Third Republic and established the authoritarian Vichy regime, becoming its Head of State. Under his "National Revolution," Pétain pursued active collaboration with Nazi Germany, implementing reactionary social policies and aiding in anti-Semitic persecutions. After the Allied victory in 1945, Pétain was tried for treason and sentenced to death, though his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by Charles de Gaulle due to his advanced age and past military service.
