Johann Georg Gmelin’s Siberian Survey
Johann Georg Gmelin was a German naturalist, botanist, geographer, and explorer born in Tübingen. After earning his medical degree, he joined the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences and participated in Vitus Bering's Second Kamchatka Expedition from 1733 to 1743. Over a decade, Gmelin traversed vast uncharted regions of Siberia, collecting extensive botanical and zoological specimens while documenting geography, climate, and indigenous ethnography. His monumental four-volume work, "Flora Sibirica," systematically classified the Siberian plant kingdom for the first time, establishing the foundation for modern scientific exploration and natural history studies of northern Asia.
