Charles Elliot
Charles Elliot
Charles Elliot was a British naval officer and Chief Superintendent of British Trade in China who navigated the escalating tensions preceding the First Opium War. When Qing Commissioner Lin Zexu confiscated illicit opium stocks in 1839, Elliot ordered British merchants to surrender their supply, promising government compensation and pushing Britain toward military intervention. During the war, he served as Plenipotentiary and negotiated the 1841 Convention of Chuenpi, securing the initial occupation of Hong Kong Island. Though dismissed by Foreign Secretary Palmerston for securing overly lenient terms, Elliot's actions permanently established British dominion over Hong Kong.
