George Macartney
George Macartney
George Macartney was a British diplomat who led the famous 1793 Macartney Embassy to China. Sent by King George III to negotiate with the Qianlong Emperor, he aimed to open Chinese ports, establish a permanent embassy in Beijing, and expand trade access beyond the restrictive Canton System. The mission famously stalled over imperial court protocol when Macartney refused to perform the traditional kowtow, offering only a single-knee genuflection instead. The Qianlong Emperor rejected all British requests, declaring China lacked nothing. Though unsuccessful, the embassy provided Europeans with valuable observations regarding Chinese military power and societal structure.
