Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry was a Commodore in the United States Navy who played a decisive role in opening Japan to the West. In 1853, he commanded a fleet of steamships into Edo Bay, delivering a presidential letter demanding trade access, protection for shipwrecked sailors, and coaling stations. Returning with increased military force in 1854, Perry leveraged gunboat diplomacy to compel the Tokugawa shogunate into signing the Convention of Kanagawa. This historic agreement ended Japan's two centuries of national isolation, triggering profound political shifts that culminated in the Meiji Restoration and rapid modernization.
