William Amherst
William Amherst
William Amherst was a British diplomat appointed as special envoy to Qing China in 1816. Following the failure of the Macartney Embassy, he sought an audience with the Jiaqing Emperor to negotiate better commercial conditions and expand trade ports beyond Canton. Upon reaching Beijing, Amherst was heavily pressured to perform the traditional kowtow ceremony. Refusing to comply on diplomatic grounds, he angered the emperor and was expelled without receiving an audience. The abrupt collapse of these talks marked a turning point, signaling the end of peaceful diplomatic approaches and setting Britain on a path toward armed confrontation.
