Aristide Briand: Diplomatic Strategist of the Coalition

Aristide Briand served as Prime Minister of France from October 1915 to March 1917, steering the nation through arduous battles such as Verdun. Briand prioritized inter-Allied coordination, organizing regular diplomatic summits and supporting the Salonika Campaign to open a new Balkan front against the Central Powers. Recognizing the exhausting toll of attrition, he actively reshuffled military command, notably replacing General Joffre with Robert Nivelle in late 1916. A master of consensus and eloquence, Briand maintained fragile parliamentary coalitions while working tirelessly to maintain Allied solidarity through the war’s most grueling middle years.
