Joachim Murat
Joachim Murat was Napoleon’s premier cavalry commander, famed for his flamboyant style and aggressive battlefield charges. After assisting Bonaparte during 13 Vendémiaire, Murat commanded cavalry forces across major campaigns, including Italy, Egypt, Austerlitz, Jena, Eylau, and Russia. He married Napoleon’s sister Caroline, becoming the Emperor’s brother-in-law, and was named Grand Duke of Berg before being appointed King of Naples in 1808. Following the disastrous Battle of Leipzig in 1813, Murat sought to preserve his kingdom by defecting to Austria. In 1815, he championed Italian unification and launched a campaign against Austria, but was defeated at Tolentino, captured in Calabria, and executed by firing squad.
