Robert Abercrombie Lovett

A Yale graduate who transitioned from Wall Street finance to politics, he was a key figure of the Eastern Establishment. As one of "The Wise Men" who led foreign and defense policy in the early Cold War era, he directed the modernization of the Pentagon and military expansion as Deputy Secretary and Secretary of Defense. He supported military escalation during the Korean War and was deeply involved in the creation of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Preferring to stay out of the spotlight, he was an exceptional administrator who rigorously crafted the framework of national security from behind the scenes.
