Chester William Nimitz
A Fleet Admiral who led the Allied forces in the Pacific to victory in World War II and led maritime strategy in the early Cold War as Chief of Naval Operations after the war. With outstanding leadership and strategic vision, he modernized the post-war US Navy into a "shield with the world's strongest deployment capability." A pioneer who early on foresaw the importance of maritime hegemony in Soviet containment during the Cold War, such as strongly supporting the introduction of nuclear-powered submarines. His distinguished achievements are inherited in the name of the modern US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier "Nimitz class."
