Building the Western Alliance and NATO
Dean Acheson served as US Secretary of State under President Truman, becoming a principal architect of postwar American foreign policy. He was instrumental in designing the Marshall Plan and drafting the Truman Doctrine, both designed to contain Soviet influence in Europe. Acheson also led the establishment of NATO and made the critical decision for US intervention in the Korean War, laying the structural and diplomatic groundwork for the Western alliance's security network throughout the Cold War era.
