Shirley Chisholm’s political barrier

An indomitable politician and educator who rewrote American political history under the motto "Unbought and Unbossed." In 1968, she became the first Black woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, dedicating herself to expanding rights for the poor, women, and minorities in her home state of New York. In 1972, she became the first Black person and woman to run in the presidential primaries for a major political party (the Democratic Party). Breaking through the dual barriers of conservative political circles during the Cold War era, she was a grand pioneer who paved the way for future generations of reformers.
