Civil Rights Pioneer Hubert Humphrey

A politician who served as a U.S. Senator representing Minnesota and the 38th Vice President, becoming a symbol of post-war liberals. At the 1948 Democratic National Convention, he eloquently called for the abolition of racial discrimination, and as Senate Majority Whip, he played a crucial role in passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As Vice President in the Johnson administration, he promoted the "Great Society" social welfare programs, but his base of support fractured over his stance on the Vietnam War. Although narrowly defeated in the 1968 presidential election, he was a passionate figure who devoted his entire life to aiding the vulnerable.
