Abolhassan Banisadr: First President of Iran
Abolhassan Banisadr
Abolhassan Banisadr was an Iranian economist and politician who served as the first President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Born near Hamadan, Iran on March 22, 1933, Banisadr allied with Ayatollah Khomeini during exile in France and returned to Iran following the 1979 revolution. Elected president in January 1980, he attempted to establish a civilian administrative authority and led defense efforts during the opening months of the Iran-Iraq War. However, intense power struggles with radical clerical factions led to his impeachment by parliament in June 1981, forcing him to flee back into exile in France.
