Mehdi Bazargan: First Prime Minister of Republic
Mehdi Bazargan
Mehdi Bazargan was a prominent Iranian scholar, engineer, and democratic activist who served as the first Prime Minister of Iran's interim government following the 1979 revolution. Born in Tehran, Iran on September 1, 1907, Bazargan founded the Freedom Movement of Iran, advocating for a synthesis of Islamic values and constitutional democracy. Appointed by Khomeini in February 1979 to rebuild post-revolutionary administration, he repeatedly clashed with radical clerical factions over the rule of law and human rights. Bazargan resigned in November 1979 following the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis, remaining an influential opposition voice until his death in 1995.
