David Ben-Gurion's Path to Statehood
David Ben-Gurion
David Ben-Gurion, born in Płońsk in 1886, was the primary founder and first Prime Minister of Israel. After emigrating to Palestine, he emerged as the preeminent leader of Labor Zionism, heading the Histadrut labor federation and later the Executive Committee of the Jewish Agency. During World War II, Ben-Gurion adopted a dual strategy: supporting the British military against Nazi Germany while fighting British restrictions on Jewish immigration to Palestine. Following the war, he directed the diplomatic and defense preparations for independence, culminating in his reading of the Israeli Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948, and his leadership during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
