Ruhollah Khomeini: Leader of the Revolution
Ruhollah Khomeini
Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was the ideological architect and Supreme Leader of the 1979 Iranian Revolution. Born in Khomein, Persia (present-day Markazi Province, Iran) on September 24, 1902, he emerged as a fierce critic of the Shah's pro-American policies, leading to his exile in 1964. During his exile in Najaf and Paris, Khomeini developed the doctrine of Velayat-e Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist). Returning to Iran in 1979, he consolidated power, established the Islamic Republic, and guided the nation through major Cold War crises, including the Iran-Iraq War and the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis, until his death in 1989.
