Hassan al-Banna: Founder of Muslim Brotherhood
Hassan al-Banna
Hassan al-Banna was an influential Egyptian Islamic scholar who founded the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928, laying the groundwork for modern political Islam. Born in Mahmoudiyah, Egypt on October 14, 1906, al-Banna sought to counteract Western colonial influence and secularization through religious education, social welfare, and moral reform. Under his leadership, the Brotherhood rapidly expanded into a mass movement with significant political influence across the Arab world. His advocacy for an Islamic state based on Sharia law created intense friction with the Egyptian monarchy and British authorities, culminating in his political assassination in Cairo in 1949.
