Mustafa Barzani: Kurdish Nationalist Leader
Mustafa Barzani
Mustafa Barzani was a pivotal Kurdish military and political leader who spearheaded the movement for Kurdish autonomy in Iraq. Born in Barzan, Ottoman Empire (present-day Kurdistan Region, Iraq) on March 14, 1903, he co-founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in 1946 and supported the short-lived Mahabad Republic in Iran. Barzani led the Peshmerga forces in decades of armed conflict against successive Iraqi regimes, navigating complex Cold War diplomacy involving the Soviet Union, Iran, and the United States. Although the 1975 Algiers Accord halted foreign support and collapsed his uprising, his leadership laid the foundational groundwork for modern Kurdish self-determination.
