Mehmed V: Reign in World War
Mehmed Han bin Abdülmecid
The 35th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, reigning from April 27, 1909, to July 3, 1918. He was the son of Abdülmecid I and Gülcemal Kadın. During the reign of his elder brother Abdülhamid II, he was kept under strict surveillance in the palace as the heir to the throne. He ascended the throne following his brother's deposal after the 31st March Incident in 1909. Although he ruled as a constitutional monarch, actual political power was held by the Committee of Union and Progress, particularly the Three Pashas (Talat, Enver, and Cemal) from 1913 onward. In World War I, he declared a holy war (jihad) against the Allied Powers in his capacity as the Ottoman Caliph. He was also interested in poetry, Persian literature, and the teachings of the Mevlevi Order.
