Mehmed VI: The Last Sultan
Mehmed Vahdeddin Han bin Abdülmecid
The 36th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and its last monarch. Ascending the throne on July 4, 1918, he reigned until the sultanate was abolished by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey on November 1, 1922. He was also the penultimate Caliph of the Ottoman Empire. Following the defeat in World War I, he sought to preserve the empire through cooperation with the Allies, which brought him into conflict with the Turkish National Movement led by Mustafa Kemal, which was gaining strength in Anatolia. While accepting the Treaty of Sèvres, the victory of the Turkish National Movement brought about the dissolution of the empire and the end of the dynasty, forcing him to leave the country aboard a British warship.
