Moshe Sharett's International Diplomacy
Moshe Sharett
Moshe Sharett, born in Kherson in 1894, was a central Israeli statesman who served as the nation's first Foreign Minister and second Prime Minister. As head of the Political Department of the Jewish Agency from 1933 to 1948, he led complex negotiations with the British Mandate administration and international bodies. During World War II, Sharett was instrumental in forming the Jewish Brigade within the British Army, enabling Jewish soldiers to combat Nazi forces. Following the war, his sophisticated diplomatic maneuvering at the United Nations was vital in securing international support for the 1947 UN Partition Plan, establishing the formal diplomatic foundations of the nascent Israeli state.
