Choe Yong-gon's Guerilla Warfare and Military Command
Choe Yong-gon
Choe Yong-gon was a prominent military commander and political leader who trained at the Whampoa Military Academy and participated in the Guangzhou Uprising. In the 1930s, he led anti-Japanese guerrilla units in Manchuria as Commander of the 7th Corps of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army. Facing intense Japanese encirclement, he retreated to Soviet territory, serving in the Red Army's 88th Independent Infantry Brigade. Returning to northern Korea after World War II, Choe played a foundational role in establishing the Korean People's Army as its initial Commander-in-Chief. He went on to command forces during the Korean War and served for decades as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.
