Chuichi Nagumo

Chuichi Nagumo

Chuichi Nagumo was a Vice Admiral who commanded the First Air Fleet, leading aircraft carrier strike forces during the Pearl Harbor attack and the Indian Ocean raid. Despite early tactical successes, his hesitation to rearm aircraft led to the catastrophic loss of four carriers at the Battle of Midway. He later commanded naval operations in the South Pacific before taking charge of the Central Pacific Area Fleet. Surrounded by U.S. forces during the defense of Saipan in July 1944, Nagumo committed suicide alongside his headquarters staff.
