Isoroku Yamamoto
Isoroku Yamamoto
Isoroku Yamamoto was an Admiral and Commander-in-Chief of the Combined Fleet. Although strongly opposed to the Tripartite Pact and a war with the United States, he planned and executed the Pearl Harbor attack once war was declared, aiming for a swift, decisive victory. An advocate for naval aviation, he spearheaded the modernization of the Japanese Navy. However, the tide turned following the crushing loss at the Battle of Midway. In April 1943, Yamamoto was killed in action when his aircraft was targeted and shot down by U.S. fighters over Bougainville.
