Kim Il Sung's Guerilla Resistance and Rise to Power
Kim Il Sung
Kim Il Sung was a guerrilla leader who joined Chinese Communist Party-affiliated armed forces in Manchuria during the 1930s, gaining prominence after leading the 1937 raid on Pochonbo. Under heavy Japanese military pressure, he retreated to the Soviet Union and served as a major in the Red Army's 88th Independent Infantry Brigade. Returning to Pyongyang with Soviet troops in 1945, Kim established his political dominance with Soviet backing, creating the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948 as its first prime minister. He initiated the Korean War, eliminated internal political opposition, and governed North Korea through his autogenous Juche ideology until his death in 1994.
