Leon Pinsker and the Call for Auto-Emancipation
Leon Pinsker
Distressed by the 1881 pogroms in the Russian Empire, Dr. Leon Pinsker recognized the limitations of assimilation and published "Auto-Emancipation" in 1882. Diagnosing anti-Semitism as a deep-seated psychological phenomenon, he argued that Jewish people must achieve national self-reliance and secure their own territory rather than depend on external goodwill. His ideas deeply influenced Jewish youth in Eastern Europe, catalyzing the early Zionist movement Hovevei Zion. As head of the Odessa Committee, Pinsker supported early agricultural settlements in Palestine, laying crucial organizational and ideological foundations for political Zionism.
