The Bab and the Emergence of the Babi Movement
The Bab
Born in Shiraz in 1819, Siyyid 'Ali Muhammad declared himself the "Bab" (Gate) in 1844, signaling a new spiritual revelation that challenged the religious and political establishment of Qajar Iran. His teachings sparked a widespread movement demanding social and spiritual renewal. Perceived as a radical threat by the government and traditional clerics, his followers faced violent suppression, culminating in the Bab's public execution by firing squad in Tabriz in 1850.
