Meriwether Lewis: Leader of Western Expedition

Meriwether Lewis (1774–1809) was an early American military officer and explorer who commanded the western expedition as commander of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Along with co-commander William Clark, he meticulously documented geography, flora, fauna, and Native American cultures from the Louisiana Purchase territory to the Pacific coast, significantly impacting America's westward expansion. After the expedition, he became Governor of the Louisiana Territory, but died mysteriously in 1809 (or 1809/1812 context). He is an iconic figure in the history of American frontier development.
