Abigail Adams: Advocate for Equality

Abigail Smith Adams (1744–1818) was the wife of John Adams, the second U.S. President, and a prominent female intellectual of early America. During the Revolutionary War, she was known for strongly advocating for women's rights and legal equality through her letters to her husband. Her words "Remember the Ladies" became iconic and influenced later women's suffrage movements. Positioned close to the heart of politics, she critiqued social systems and demonstrated the intellectual presence of women in founding-era America.
