Cotton Mather

A prominent Puritan minister and scholar of New England from the 17th to 18th century. As a member of the prestigious Mather family, he provided spiritual guidance to the colony through a vast body of writing. While he drew criticism from posterity for his involvement in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and his stance of allowing spectral evidence, he also had a deep knowledge of science and demonstrated a pioneering aspect in modern medicine by promoting variolation to prevent smallpox. He is a figure symbolizing an era of transition, serving as both a guardian of faith and an introducer of modern science.
